Each October, the nation celebrates and observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). While the name and length have changed since its inception in 1945, this will be the 75th observance of NDEAM by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).

Each year, the DOL announces a curated theme that focuses on an aspect of disabled peoples’ inclusion and contributions to the workforce. This year’s theme is “Increasing Access and Opportunity”.

People with disabilities, parents, caregivers and professional service providers have been fighting for the inclusion of more than 61 million disabled adults into the American workforce for nearly a century. However, observance of NDEAM is not left to only disability-related organizations. Employers in every industry and of any size are encouraged to participate.

As an employer, you can make a commitment to review your company policies to ensure they lead to an inclusive workplace culture, create displays and spread awareness through social media, and participate in Disability Mentoring Day on the third Wednesday of each October to promote career development through job shadowing and hands-on programs.
